One of the nice things about attending convention and weekends is talking with all the other tall ladies about what it's like to date as a taller female.
Boy, do our stories ensue.
There is nothing like sitting with a glass of wine, at afterhours and joking with the ladies about dating. I have heard so many things, like wow, how's the weather... some comments that will remain... unmentioned because they are so rude.. but hearing that I am intimidating is probably one of the most frequent comments. I find that interesting, particularly because I haven't opened my mouth to speak yet! Wait until they find out how smart I am. Wink wink.
But I digress. I think everyone has their challenges in life dating, but being tall adds a whole other level of interesting.
The big take away for me, especially as I've grow as a person, not growing up tall, was that I need to embrace who I am, fully and completely. That isn't easy to do when you have something that makes you noticeably different.
Then there's the clothes and shoes. I'm a bit of a girlie girl. I love wearing pretty dresses and lip gloss and heels... I think it's the opposite of my hiking attire that I love to wear as well. Anyway! Finding clothes and shoes that fit properly is always a bit of a challenge. In recent years I've moved more to leggins and tall socks. Stretchy clothes are great, and if the leggings are too short, I just pull up the socks. Then I'll wear a longer tunic or even a dress to get the funky look I like.
Also, dresses are great too. It's easier than pants I find, because you don't run into the 'pants too short' issue with jeans etc. Plus, wearing a dress makes me feel great and look good on a date!
But high heels. This is a tough one. I always joke that at 5'11", I'm one of the shorter ladies. Most of the ladies in the club are well into the 6 foot range, and the guys are 6'6" and higher. With the club I get to break out all my sparkly heels... not so much in my regular life, where all my friends seem to be 5'2"!
Me in particular, I'm happy to date someone that is taller or shorter than me. My experience dating has been that guys like to date someone that is shorter than them... most guys anyway. So that can make it tough sometimes. But fun!
I think one of the reasons I ran in the pageant this past year was so I could get better at being me, embracing the tall, 'intimidating', and big personality that I run with in my life. I am a singer who lives her life 'out there' after all :)
