For over two years, the club's website has been hosted as
a free service of E-Tech Express because of our non-profit
status.
Unfortunately, the free part has ended. In a recent policy
change, our service provider has decided to begin charging
all of their clients based on
the amount of (hard drive) space the website requires.
Our website had grown so large that we would have had to
pay hundreds of dollars per month to maintain it!
The
majority of our site's content (about 90%) was dedicated
to photos of old club events. At the end of September,
all but the most recent photos were removed from the site
in order to bring the total size down to the lowest price
bracket. Anyone still wishing to see these photos can
contact me via email.
At the September membership meeting, the club voted on a
budget to cover this new expense. It was decided
that we would pay by the month and look for another
provider that would either donate their services or charge
less than our current provider.
OCTOBER BOARD
MEETING UPDATE:
We have found an economical solution to the problems
laid out above, which will be announced soon!
Come to the November membership meeting, or watch this
space and/or the November newsletter for more details.
LATE BREAKING
NEWS! We now have a "mirror site" on
TCI's TALL.Org web server! Our pages load slower
from the TCI server, but web hosting is provided as a free
service by TCI. By storing a copy of the entire site
(except for the photo archive) on the TCI server, it can
be viewed at
www.tall.org/clubs/ohio/highcincinnatians,
even if our other server goes down or we change providers!
Future plans
for our website: I have been talking to Paul Dumont recently, and he
has agreed to provide some technical assistance with the
website. In the coming months, look for some dramatic
changes in the way the website looks and functions. We
will be adding some interactive features that will allow
things like posting messages and online RSVP /
registration for events! Stay tuned for more details.
A lot of work goes into designing and maintaining the
site. The goal is to provide a site with informative
and entertaining content. Your contributions are
encouraged!
